It's Always Sunny

When it comes to sunny summer days, a fabulous pair of sunglasses is a woman’s best friend. This year, cat eyes and retro frames are considered the must-have styles, but before you blindly follow the season’s latest trends, it’s important to take into consideration which style looks best on you!

The first step in finding a stellar pair of shades is determining your face shape. To do so, trace the outline of your face in the mirror with lipstick or a bar of soap. Once you become familiar with the characteristics of your face, you’ll be able to play up your finest features.

Round

Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet and Drew Barrymore are all examples of celebrities with symmetrically round features. The key to selecting sunnies for a round face is to finding a pair that elongates your face, making it look longer and leaner. Oversized frames are typically a great fit for round faces.

Oval

Oval faces like Gisele Bundchen and Kelly Rowland have it easy when it comes to sunglasses. Most styles complement an oval face, as long as you pay attention to proportion. As long as you scale your frames to the size of your face, the world of sunglasses is your oyster.

Heart-Shaped

For heart shaped faces like Katie Holmes and Victoria Beckham, should search for frames that draw the eye upward. By bringing attention to the top the face, you balance out a narrow chin.

Rectangular

Rectangular faces are defined by their angular features. When choosing a style of sunglasses, look for features that may soften these angles, such as round or rimless frames. Jennifer Aniston and Sandra Bullock are both examples of such bone structure.

Friday Flashback

{The crazy "Birthday Girl" pin my friend made me wear ALL DAY LONG! I must admit, it did put a smile on my face.}
Hello Lovely. This has been an absolutely amazing week. I enjoyed a scrumptious birthday dinner at one of my favorite Tai restaurants with my sweet hubby, took advantage of a "cool front" that came through for some unseasonably chilly weather and had a little shopping spree for my final birthday festivities tomorrow. Above and beyond everything that made my week so special was receiving a beautiful email from Jessica, a new follower to I Look Good Today. Her personal story and thoughtful words touched my heart so deeply (Thank you Jessica for reaching out to me!). I hope you all have a fun-filled weekend!

{This week included National Secretaries Day. Although I am not a secretary my boss wanted to thank me for all I do not only for our department, but also for the mission of our organization. So sweet!}

Vintage Shopping 101

In a world where everything is accessible and ubiquitous, vintage is the way to personalize your look - and one of my favorite ways!) Plus with vintage, you're pretty much guaranteed that your buy will last. Every decade has something to offer: a little black dress from the '50s or a great jersey one-shoulder disco dress from the '70s as signature looks that will last forever. The irony is that vintage is actually what all of the new stuff in stores is made to look like anyway.

Want to know an easy, fun and relatively inexpensive way to do some vintage shopping? Costume jewelry! The nice thing about it is that there's very expensive collectible designer costume jewelry, but some of the cheap pieces are just as fabulous — even if they aren't by famous names. A pair of gorgeous chandelier earrings or a big over-the-top necklace can make something cheap look really cheerful and chic. And a nice, jeweled evening clutch is an affordable vintage must!

Remember the success to being a vintage shopper. . .you have to take your emotions out of it. If something doesn't fit or if it's really damaged, I don't care how great it makes you feel, you have to leave it. The challenge with vintage is that it's an emotional way to shop because you're buying history. But you have to be realistic. Otherwise, you'll take it home and it'll sit in your closet. Think of it as treasure hunting: You have to explore a bit before you find the gems.

34

I love birthdays. More specifically, I love my birthday.

Yesterday was my 34th birthday. To say I was overwhelmed by the number of happy birthday texts, phone calls, Facebook and Twitter messages would have been an understatement. I am EXTREMELY grateful and blessed to have such wonderful people in my life who made me feel so very loved.

As much as I do like to reflect on on the past (I think it is important to realize and appreciate how far you have come.), my birthday is a time to celebrate!
When I turned 21 I was proud of the life I was creating (I had graduated from college and working my first "real" job). At 28 I felt like I was really stepping in to my "adult shoes" (That's when I got married). At 32, it was easy to feel accomplished (I was a homeowner, had great job, a great hubby, was cast in a movie - life was good).

Now at 34 I have to tell you, I feel more comfortable in me as I ever have (Good Lord, is this what it feels like to grow up?). When I say that I more comfortable in me, don't get me wrong, I have enough self confidence for a room full of people. However there is this peace about me. I KNOW who I am.

I have been through a lot in my 34 years. I don't say that to get any accolades - I say that only to say that because of those things, I am proud of my life and look forward to what is to come in the future.

Being You Is Beautiful

I'm fat. I'm too skinny. I'd be happy if I were taller, shorter, had curly hair, straight hair, a smaller nose, flatter abs, longer legs.

Do any of these statements sound familiar? Are you used to putting yourself down? Let's face it, with so much in our society focused on what it means to be beautiful and the perception of what the "ideal" beauty is from the media - you know the six foot tall, 100 pound model/actress - it is no wonder why women struggle with their self esteem.

My entire life I have been in this chair. For three of my teen years I wore a back brace under my clothes to help slow down the curvature in my spine before surgery would be inevitable, which caused me to look heavier than I was. I knew I looked different. I couldn't wear the latest fashions that all my peers were wearing. It drove me crazy, but I still looked in the mirror each day and told myself, I look good today!

I grew up with a very healthy self-image, but even a mostly positive view of ourselves, while preferable to a negative slant, isn’t enough. We deserve better. And here’s a tip: If you look in the mirror and don’t like what you see, you’re looking in the wrong mirror.

I realize that for many women, we put a lot of our self image on whether or not we are deemed beautiful by men we are attracted to. If they compliment us, if they give us the attention we so desire, then we are satisfied into believing that yes, we are beautiful. Again I won't lie and tell you that my own self image isn't boosted by a man's attention, but my point is that this should not be the sole reason that I (or we as women) should feel good about ourselves.

Not long ago I introduced you to a dear friend of mine, Steven Gantt (If you missed that post you can read it here). Steven is one of the most sincere, genuine and uplifting people I have ever met. When I was writing this post I asked him what his thoughts were on what makes a woman beautiful to him.

"Jamie the key to truly "looking good" is to start from the inside. Yes I know it is easier said than done, and even IF you can do it, it is still not the solution one may seek. I know, I know - just listen... Once you realize, truly REALIZE that YOU (Yes you, the one reading this.) are an AMAZING person, you are a miracle, heck you are a whole bushel of miracles. Your mind understands and calculates an infinitely innumerable amount of things - daily. Who knows you better than yourself? No one - you know what a bright light you are. Now what you do is realize this and the best way to convey this - all of this wonder and hope and love (For yourself and others with the SAME light and love and wonderment) - is to SMILE.

Fashion is fashion, believe me I love it, however we each have and develop our own style (Albeit some more quirkier than others.). The key here my friends is that no matter what you wear, you have to smile and people will notice, HE will notice (Raises eyebrow to see if you're understanding.).

Whether you are short, tall, average - white, yellow, black, brown - have curly hair, straight hair, NO hair - thin, fit, curvy or voluptuous - there is someone for everyone and the key is so simple: (Waaaait for it) SMILE - it's the second best thing you can do with your mouth (Dear Lord I hope you're laughing.).

Colors are colors and aren't hard to figure out how to coordinate - shoes are fun and help you look great. Yet the one thing you can do so they can see you coming from a mile away is let them see your light and show them your smile (Just had an epiphany to write children's books)."

Some people think they need to change how they look or act to feel good about themselves. But actually all you need to do is change the way you see yourself and think about yourself.

The first thing to do is recognize that your body is your own, no matter what shape, size, or color it comes in. If you're worried about your weight or size, check with your doctor to verify that things are OK. But it's no one's business but your own what your body is like — ultimately, you have to be happy with yourself.

When you hear negative comments coming from within yourself, tell yourself to stop. Try building your self-esteem by giving yourself three compliments every day. While you're at it, every evening list three things in your day that really gave you pleasure. It can be anything from the way the sun felt on your face, the sound of your favorite band, or the way someone laughed at your jokes. By focusing on the good things you do and the positive aspects of your life, you can change how you feel about yourself.

Remember, the flaws we see in ourselves do not define us. We are all unique and that's what makes us beautiful.

P.S. I strongly encourage you to connect with Steven at the links below. You will be glad that you did!!!

Are You A Fashion Criminal?

Do you break long standing traditional fashion rules or do you find yourself tempted to break fashion them? Rules that have been around for who knows how long? Do you put little thought into breaking fashion traditions? Perhaps you are a woman that just loves to break fashion laws, and could not care less about the consequences. If you answered yes to the above question's. You are most likely a fashion criminal.

Perhaps you are a woman that finds it very hard to break some of the long standing fashion rules. Well, I hope I can change your mind. Please read on, and see if I can't convince you - that some fashion law's are screaming to be broken... You may just realize you are a fashion criminal after all.

It's may be time to "break free", and find your way around old-fashioned fashion laws. In fact It's time to break some rules, toss caution to the wind, and take some fashion liberties. Let's spice up your fashion chic, and give you your own set of rules.

Suede... Can One Wear Suede in Warmer Weather?

Break it! Yes you read right, suede can be worn in warmer months. However, it is wise, and fashionable to wear lighter colored suede in the summer. And you can find some wonderful suede shoes, and handbags in the store in light neutral color's, also in soft pastels and nude shades. They are absolutely yummy. So add some much needed texture to your summer outfits, just by adding a bit of suede. If you're on a budget, choose to purchase nude shades, these neutral shades will take you into fall and winter. Why not shop smart?

Shoes Should Always Match Your Handbag

Break it! Match style, not color. When breaking this law of fashion keep a few things in mind. Do make sure a bit of color is in both shoe and handbag, this pulls the mixing of shoe and handbag into a pulled together look. You don't have to match leather to leather either. For instance, you can wear a straw sandal with a great leather or even canvas tote - even suede will work. Play with your materials, mix it up a bit, you will be surprised at the great looks you can create. A look that is yours alone.

Layering Your Metals With Pearls And Gems

Break It! Layer your metals, layer necklaces, and bracelets. Even add glitz to the mix, you will love the look - I promise. The latest trend in jewelry it's funky, chunky and looks like it came from a pirates hidden chest. When searching for such adornments, focus on a mix of chains, pearls, charms and also anything from the sea - that underwater influences is big. The chunkier, the better. Since it's a statement piece, pair it with a simple little black dress.

Friday Flashback

{Jelly fish at the FL Aquarium. I wouldn't want to come in contact with them in the ocean, but they are quite beautiful in this exhibit!}

Good Morning Gorgeous. This week hubby and I have made a decision. We need to cut back on the laundry list of extra activities that fill our days. Although they are things we love to do, we are finding ourselves exhausted. I think everyone needs to do that every once in a while. To simply take a step back to recharge. So although we don't plan to stay away from these activities forever; here is to some much needed downtime!

Walking on Sunshine

This spring I have found myself really drawn to the color yellow. Yellow dress. Yellow blouse. Yellow pants. Yellow jewels.  No color looks better with a slight tan to wake up your features and no color can perk up your wardrobe in a serious way than the kiss of sunshine!

My Face is Pur

Back in high school I was lucky to have very clear skin. My makeup routine in the morning was very basic with the less is more mentality.

As I have gotten older, that mentality has not changed, however I have found that the products I use have increased a bit. I went from wearing only powder as a base back in high school to now wearing primer, foundation and powder because as I have aged my skin has seemingly become more oily.

Having tried numerous products to control my oily t-zone, and with the desire to ditch the multiple products I was using in order to achieve this desired look, I stumbled upon one product that controls the mid-day shine, evens skin tones and feels absolutely weightless (Probably because I am using one product instead of three.)

So what is this magical product you ask? It is Pur Mineral's 4-in-1 Pressed Mineral Makeup Foundation with Skincare Ingredients!

Though a little expensive (around 25.00) this is absolutely the best makeup I have ever used! I apply it with a big round makeup brush and find that it covers my skin evenly without looking cakey. It looks so natural, in fact, many people approach me in public and tell me how flawless my skin looks and ask how I did it! I just smile and tell them my face is Pur!

Sleeping Beauty

There are countless, clever cosmetics and products on the market to help you look refreshed, but nothing can substitute for an old fashioned, good night's sleep. I have always been teased by my family and hubby about the amount of sleep I require given my own free will (I can easily sleep for 10+ hrs!), but I just smile and say I am just getting my beauty sleep.

With a busy schedule, those days of sleeping in are few and far between for me. When I do get the chance to take advantage of those extra hours in bed, I have found that there are a few products that will help you wake up feeling refreshed and energized.

Chic sheets
From athletes to fashionistas, we all count on high quality fabrics to keep us comfy during the day — so why should the sheets we sleep on be any different? SHEEX has developed the world's first luxury performance sheets, which control temperature, wick away moisture and have an extra soft feel for more restful, restorative sleep ($49 and up; sheex.com).

Sound sleepers
Whether you like to fall asleep to music or you're just hoping to block out unwanted noise, SleepPhones are a smart solution. Unlike bulky or hard earbuds, SleepPhones are a cozy, fleece headband with small speakers built-in, so you can drift off peacefully surrounded by your favorite sounds ($39.95; sleepphones.com).

Bedtime breeze
For those who sleep most comfortably in cooler temperatures, you'll be excited to learn about Brookstone's Bed Fan, which delivers a light breeze between the sheets. Perfect for couples with different temperature preferences and great for anyone who loves that cool, "other side of the pillow" feeling ($79.99; Brookstone.com).

Good times
Sleep cycles last 90 minutes, and if you wake up in the middle of one, you're more likely to feel groggy. Thanks to a free website called sleepyti.me, you can figure out exactly what time to fall asleep, ensuring that you make the most of your snooze.

What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Stronger

I know that Kelly Clarkson's song "Stronger" isn't exactly new to hit the radio waves, yet I can't help but break into all kinds of dancing...in the car, in the kitchen, in my office (wherever I am) whenever I hear it.

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger
Stand a little taller
Doesn't mean I'm lonely when I'm alone
What doesn't kill you makes a fighter
Footsteps even lighter
Doesn't mean I'm over cause you're gone

I know the basis of this song is about breaking up with someone, but to me it speaks much deeper than that. To me it speaks to all the obstacles you tackle in your life, and the fact that going through them makes you. . .wait for it. . .stronger!

I am a very spiritual person. I know that without my faith I would not have been able to overcome many of my own obstacles in life. I have faced challenges, both relating to my physical disability and those that are your "typical" challenges that I thought, how in the world am I ever going to get through this? In those moments, the resolution (If you want to call it that), seems either so far away or COMPLETELY unattainable. Trust me, I've been there.

Then my personal reality check inevitably kicks in (and I tell you it ALWAYS does. . .it's like I know no other way.). Call me a complete optimist, but I cannot help but to at least try and see every situation as having a positive outcome. It may not come in the beginning, but I eventually find my way to it. My BFF always says to me that I seem to always come up with "the plan" to make even the most negative of situations have a silver lining.

Let's face it; I could sit here and look at my life and the challenges I face and be completely defeated. I could throw myself a pity party because sometimes things just aren't "easy" for me like they are for my able-bodied friends. "Poor, poor Jamie...NOT!" Whatever!

I know without a shadow of a doubt that I would not be the Jamie I am today; the optimistic, go after what I want, stubborn, won't take no for an answer, I Look Good Today girl that I am if I did not truly embrace my life and all that comes with it.

I know there are so many reading this post that feel deflated because whatever you are facing right now seems too much to endure. I don't know what that burden might be for you, but believe me, I have been there too and I promise you that you can endure whatever test you are facing! The answers may not be clear today, but don't give up.

I can't promise that your situation will play out exactly how you want it to, but the next time you hear Kelly Clarkson's "Stronger" on the radio, do what I do. Crank the volume up, dance your butt off and remember, you will make it through this and be stronger for it!

Friday Flashback

{So excited Rays Baseball is back!!! We need more cowbell!!!}
Happy Friday Love Bugs. Do you ever have those weeks where you blink and it goes from Monday to Friday? That was definitely my week. It honestly seemed like a blur. I accomplished a lot at work (I can multitask with the best of them!) and I even was able to take yesterday off to enjoy a little "me" time (Even though I spent it with my BFF.). We all need those days where we can simply relax and recharge. I hope your week was simply superb. Enjoy your weekend!

{Call me crazy, but I spent SIX hours at the salon getting my hair Japanese straightened. Don't judge. I look good today!!!}

Way To Work It!

I am a firm believer that in both women's and men's fashion you must dress for success. I know it is cliche, but it is true.

We are all too often labeled by first impressions on our appearance. There are true benefits for taking pride and paying attention to detail with your wardrobe.

One of those benefits is that you have the ability to improve your professionalism, both inside and outside of work. Dressing for success is often associated with professional clothes.  If public perception and professionalism is important to you (or your job), you will want to take proper steps to ensure that you are dressing for success.

If you are a follower of this blog for any amount of time, you know that self esteem to me is above all important. Believe it or not, dressing for success is not all about the label on your back, it is much about
self-confidence and self-esteem. These are both critical to your health and well being. It is a known fact that those who look good often feel good about themselves. This extra confidence is important when looking to dress for success, especially in instances where you may not only be attending a job interview or an important business meeting but also for an evening out with  your significant other or friends. It is amazing how this increased self-confidence can help you make a good impression!

It is important to remember that you don’t really need to have a reason to always be cognisant of your appearance. Even if you have no one to impress, you can still benefit, in terms of self-confidence and self-esteem, from poising yourself for success, by dressing for it.

Dressing for success illustrates to others that you care about your perceived demeanor (and you should), that you care about your job and being professional at it (and you should), and that you have the drive, determination and the right attitude for moving forward with confidence no matter what the circumstances.

From Where I Sit: Not What You Were Expecting

Something struck me as funny recently; a reoccurring theme. As you know, I work in PR, a very in your face, in the lime light, front and center type of field. . .and I love every minute of it!

Prior to meeting a possible business partner/donor/visitor I usually have correspondence with them over the phone and/or email. During those conversations, whichever they may be, I never say,

"Oh and by the way, I'm in a wheelchair."

What would be the point? It doesn't define me, nor does it have any barring on my work capabilities.

So when it comes time for the face-to-face first meeting this is how the scenario usually goes:

I get the call from our front desk telling me my guest has arrived. I come out to greet the guest, approach them with a hello and perfect PR smile and then wait for it. That split second where they look at me in almost disbelief that I am "the Jamie" they have been talking with because of my being in a wheelchair.

I laugh to myself because it happens almost EVERY TIME.

Friday Flashback

{On the set at ABC}
I felt like quite the little fashionista celebrity this week when I was asked to be on our local ABC affiliate to promote I Look Good Today. Although I deal with the media quite frequently I'm usually speaking on behalf of my job with reporters. So to be interviewed (for 8 minutes!) about I Look Good Today was very humbling to me. I can't wait to share the interview with all of you! Good things are coming my friends! This weekend hubby and I are visiting with my parents for a little getaway to Beverly Hills (FL). I hope you all have a relaxing weekend!!!

Fashion Rules to Break: A Quick Mix

The Rule: Don’t mix patterns and prints

Break It: This rule may have spared a few retinas back in the ‘70s and ‘80s when designs were over-sized, abstract and sometimes jaw-droppingly ugly. Current patterns echo much older motifs and are classic rather than crass. Try matching the dominant color of two different patterns, or pair an over-sized print with a miniature one. A neutral-hued plaid coat over a delicate floral blouse looks timeless.

Building Your Fashionista Wardrobe

Does this sound familiar? Your open your closet doors, step inside (If you are like me with a walk-in closet.) and stare with uninspired dismay at the same clothes you have worn over and over again as you try to come up with some new and creative clothing combination.

Sadly, this has been the feeling I have been having recently with my own wardrobe. I actually have 2 1/2 closets full of clothes and think. . .I have NOTHING TO WEAR!!!

It might not be affordable to go out and buy an entirely new wardrobe (I can dream), but there are some staple items that are great for any fashionista to build her new wardrobe:

1. Black Leather Pumps: If you need a pair of shoes that you can wear with just about anything, you can not go wrong with a basic black leather pump.

2. Tailored White Shirt: Whether you are headed into the board room, to a business dinner or a movie date, you can't go wrong with a tailored white button down. This simple yet classic piece can be dressed up or down for any occasion.

3. A Black Suit: Every lady needs a suit on standby in the event she is called for a last minute interview. A basic black suit is the best option for suiting. It allows you the versatility to dress it up different colored tops and bold accessories or wear minimal accessories for a more conservative look.

4. A Knee Length Jacket: Some outfits may require a jacket and some may require a longer, more formal overcoat. If your budget is tight, opt for a knee length jacket. This type of outwear can be worn in a casual manner as well as dressy.

5. Diamond Stud Earrings: This is a classic fashion accessory that compliments any outfit. Large or small, you can't go wrong with diamond studs. . .diamonds are a girls best friend after all!

6. The Perfect Black Dress: If Mr. Right calls to take you out for a night on the town, would you have the perfect dress in your closet? A nicely cut black dress is a wardrobe essential for any woman's closet. Something as simple as a sheath or nicely fitted dress can be dressed up nicely for many events with the right accessories.

7. Jeans that fit like a glove: When I say fit like I glove, I mean a nicely fitted glove and not a glove that is bursting at the seams. A classy lady would never wear jeans that are too tight. However, it is nice to have jeans that compliment your figure.

8. Two nice handbags: Although higher end designer bags are expensive, they make for wonderful day to day handbags. For example, the Louis Vuitton Speedy is built to resist the day to day wear and tear. While you may spend a little more on this bag, the years of use will prove to be well worth it. If high end designer bags are out of your budget, a nice leather handbag is also a great pick. It is also great to have a formal handbag or clutch on hand in the event you attend a banquet or formal event.

9. Sexy Underwear: Half of how your look in your clothing is how you wear it. If you do not have properly fitting undergarments, it will show. Invest in a couple of bras that provide adequate support and coverage. You pantie drawer should include a variety of cuts and styles of panties to include both thong underwear and seamless panties. Why ruin a perfect pair of fitted leggings with an unattractive pantie line?

10. A String of Pearls and Matching Earrings: When I put my pearls on, I instantly look very classy. I think Breakfast at Tiffany's chic! If you have a plain black dress, style and class can be added with a string of pearls. Pearls are a must in the jewelry box of the modern lady.

Just Breathe

I pride myself on being a very positive, upbeat person. I have always seen the good side in people, in situations and challenges I've faced. I'm the person that sees the world with unwavering optimism; that with the right attitude you can accomplish and get through anything (My hubby calls it my "Little Jamie World"). It might sound hokey, but don't knock it; I like it there.

I have and always will be the friend that everyone goes to for support, advice and to be uplifted. When it comes to my own challenges, I have this habit of just "dealing" with things on my own, and thankfully always seem to come out on top and unscathed. However, lately my world has been a little chaotic and I've been the one needing the support, advice and uplifting from friends as things just seemed a bit much for me to handle alone.

I've had my share of tears lately. Questions regarding different aspects of my life. This past weekend I spent much of my time on the phone with the most amazing friends talking through things and getting the support I so desperately needed. I tell you, without them, I would have been lost!

Do you know what literally every single person said to me (Among other fabulous words of wisdom.)?

"Breathe Jamie. Just breathe."

I needed to step back. I needed to sit in the quiet of my own thoughts and just wrap myself around everything going on in this head of mine.

Do I have all the answers that I need? No. But I do have a sense of peace that things will be OK . . .one way or another.

So my advice to you is this. When the world seems to come crashing down on you, find that friend that you can confide in, let them help carry your burden, because you are not alone.

And remember . . . just breathe!

Giveaway: Handbag Heaven

Good Morning Gorgeous!

Back in November I was honored to be asked to be a part of one of my absolute favorite online stores, Handbag Heaven's, Style Guide.
Handbag Heaven is your place to find the best selection of designer-inspired purses and handbags online! They offer the widest selection of quality, fashionable handbags at affordable prices. Whether you are looking for a special occasion clutch, a neutral everyday shoulder bag, or a bold statement piece, Handbag Heaven is the place to find it all!

A great feature about Handbag Heaven that I absolutely LOVE is that if you are having trouble deciding which of their fabulous bags to choose from, or can’t seem to find exactly what you are looking for just let them know. They are available every day via phone or email to make your shopping experience the best it can be and will ensure you are completely satisfied with your purchase.

Another great feature they offer to help you find your personal handbag style is their super fun Style Guide Quiz. Once you take the quiz you are able to shop for handbags that fall under your particular style category. After taking the quiz myself, I am undoubtedly a feminine style handbag girl (Wouldn't you agree this fits me?).

Thanks to my friends at Handbag Heaven, one lucky I Look Good Today follower will receive a $50 gift card to use on any item in their store!!!
