You Are Beautiful

Do you ever have a song that just speaks to you? I know it isn't a new song, but lately I have been obsessed with the song Beautiful by Christina Aguilera (I'm actually listening to it as I write this post.).

Every day is so wonderful
Then suddenly, it's hard to breathe
Now and then, I get insecure
From all the pain, I'm so ashamed

I am beautiful no matter what they say
Words can't bring me down
I am beautiful in every single way
Yes, words can't bring me down
So don't you bring me down today

Each and every time I hear this song I think about this blog and those that find their way to it each day. I think about the patients at the children's hospital I work at that just need a little pick me up.

The hardest thing for me is hearing that a reader or a patient or friend is feeling down on themselves, especially because of someone else's words or actions. That when they look in the mirror they can't say, "I look good today," or "I'm important," or "I make a difference." Sadly, I hear this over and over again.

My BFF jokes with me all the time. He will say to me,

"Jamie, I just wait for the day when you say, I look bad today."

Want to know my response to him?

"Keep waitin!"

In our society, when so much seems to be judged on appearances, I understand the pressures people feel about their looks. My entire life I have felt like I have had to prove myself because of my disability. It isn't "normal" to society to have someone like myself be in the forefront of things, and that is exactly where I like to be!

When I was in high school and college I was in show choir, I have been in advertisements on billboards, on the side of buses, in TV commercials, radio, magazines, online, in a movie, etc. For the past eight years I have been in the PR field; again in the public eye. I have never let my disability or people's impressions of me or what I look like derail me from going after what I want.

The lyrics in this song simply affirm my beliefs that we are all beautiful in our own way and we need to believe that we are deserving of all we desire! I refuse to let someone's negativity dictate the way I feel about myself or determine what I will accomplish.

The key is to believe in yourself. If you are having one of those down moments, choose one thing; just one thing about yourself that you are proud of and build from there. You will surprise yourself with just how impactful speaking those positive words over your life can be!

  2. I like this song too! It's so empowering. We live in a very superficial world so we must really hold on to something within us. Inspiring post! :)

  4. I know this post is meant to be uplifting. But for some reason it reminded me of the most horrible boss I ever had. Now he never said anything to me. I wasn't important enough for him to have interaction with me. The memory that your post triggered was the time the office had some visitors for the day. I think they were from the government. I remember seeing what I thought were new employees. A black woman and a disabled man appeared out of nowhere. When I went home for the day. I saw the disabled man in the parking lot. Imagine for a moment. This guy wheels himself to his car, gets up, places his wheelchair in the trunk, and drives off. It was completely for show. My boss had hired "actors" so he could portray the business as being diverse. After the visitors left, we never saw the black woman or the fake disabled guy again.

  6. Jamie, your a godsend. You have ways to make someone feel better. you are an amazing friend.

There so much to tell you and I feel like I never got a chance to call you and I want to call you, I will make the time this weekend.

Our Volunteer President of the Auxiliary board is one harsh women...She has this cold attitude about her. Its like she never smiles. You ask her a question and it seems that she doesn't care.

I'm always thinking, " Well, if you can't work in a public setting like this...and have this cold demeanor about you, then why are you even working here?"

Let me tell you a story: Couple of years ago, when I first started working there..Kelly, my boss I always talk about was interviewing this potential person for a volunteer job..but to Kelly, this person seemed off, unfriendly, and somewhat has strange behavior about herself.

To make long story short, Kelly didn't hire her because that not type of attitude that a hospital should have or have around patients and their family. You are suppose to be happy, smiling, courtesous..NOT cold like the president of the Auxiliary board..

So now what I do is, I don't strike up a conversation and I just keep my mouth shut. Why upset myself more by TRYING to talk to someone who is cold?

As I close this, A lot of people do not like this person at all...And when I told Kelly about it she was like, " Well, she just doesn't think before she speaks." What Kelly doesn't get is that she is like this to EVERYONE that comes in contact.

Its so HARD to talk to people who are like that.

  7. I can relate to Kristin. My ex-boss was a cold-hearted man. The black woman and handicapped man trick was only one of thousands of stunts he pulled. He had one of those handicapped placards on his car so he could park in handicapped parking spaces. I have no idea how he got one. The last straw was when the office was working day and night to deliver a project to a client under budget and under time. A huge bonus was structured into the contract. Well, we earned the maximum bonus. But what did we all get instead? A catered lunch and a $100 Visa gift card! We were all expecting more than $1,000 each! My ex-boss pocketed most of our bonus and not to mention his own bonus as well. My mom called me last Wednesday to go to church. I didn't feel like sitting thru Mass. I told her I'm going to heaven b/c I've spent my time in hell. I only hope for the worse things in life for that man.

    1. Wow, some people will really do anything to get ahead. We see people all the time parking in handicapped parking and climb out of these huge trucks. Hmmm, not sure they need the parking space. The thing that also gets me is when ppl park their motorcycles in the hash marks of the handicapped spot so I can't put the ramp down in my van to get out. Not a parking spot people.
